Disappearing Com Port (XP-Pro)

Hi Guys

Wonder if any one here can help me solve a problem with my Windows XP Pro installation, I have asked Microsoft (there goes my warranty question) and they didn't help, told me I have a hardware problem, I however don't agree.

Working PC upgraded to Win XP all was working fine including the com ports. Now I find my RS232 Com Port 1 disappears (as far as XP is concerned) if it isn't used. Control panel reports it is working fine, HotSync knows better! Com 2 is connected to a modem is is always fine.

Easy to get it back I just uninstall the driver and XP then adds it back, all is well (I can HotSync) until I leave the PC to go into stand-by mode when only com 1 will disappear until I repeat the process above.

All suggestions welcome and I'll happily try most things (remembering once being told to put my PC in a very uncomfortable place!)
Regards

Richard

MS is correct, when one uses "PC to go into stand-by mode or hibernation" some HARDWARE will NOT allow the system to wake up. I have seen this on many different machines. I will NOT use these functions, they are a waste of time. Each OS has hardware requirements and you have just found one that is NOT supported by the new OS because the OEM of the device has NOT provided complete supporting drivers.

Totally agree with you and sorry it was poor terminonogly on my part when I said standby I didn't mean when XP shuts down loads of stuff, on advice from Woody that was turned off months ago. I think I should have said when XP logs out of the current user, or is that the same thing? If so what should I do?

I do NOT think that " XP logs out ". A user may log out from their account and then log in to another account or back in later. I have not had any problems doing this including switch user since the beta1 testing of Windows XP.

OK, whatever XP does when it goes to the User login (as you can likely tell I don't necessary know all the right terminology to use) screen and I log back in I will find Com1 is no longer working until I uninstall the driver and XP puts it back in.

Doesn't matter much what is connected the driver still goes but normally HotSync, but I get the same with a modem or just a dumb terminal. As to the driver version 5.1.2600.0 I have tried clicking the update driver and it just says I have the latest.

What is happen when you choose Shutdown or Restart option rather than Standby?

Does COM port disappears when you lock the computer instead of logoff/login?

When COM port disappears, do you see it in Device Manager? Are there any errors?

Re: Disappearing Com Port (XP-Pro)

1) Never used the Standby option so don't know but shutdown or restart will likely loose com1

2) Most of the time yes I loose it

In case 1 & 2 nine times out of ten the com1 goes.

3) Yes still in device manager and apparently working correctly so no errors.

No, please don't be confused by my mention of HotSync, regardless of the program which uses com 1 the effect is the same, even Hyperterminal or if I connect a modem Windows fails to see it until I re-install the Com port driver.

Re: Disappearing Com Port (XP-Pro)

As you know I'm not using standby but following your advice I have tried this and it has changed a few things relating to my com ports. I have now reached the point where selecting the correct modem driver for com2 takes out com1, yet using the default modem driver does not. So I'll check the modem by sending it a few faxes and if all is well it's fixed . I'll report back later.

Re: Disappearing Com Port (XP-Pro)

Wow have I had fun, I tried the standby thing that replaced PCI.SYS and bang, bye bye XP

So big system rebuild and problem goes away. So I still don't know what caused the problem but a complete system rebuild (this time with the eariler version of PCI.SYS) leaves me with a system that is working a well as any XP setup.

Thank you all for your help.
Regards

Richard
