    Desktop-Icons

When,i,start or reboot my pc,the desktop-icons,start of as a sort of files, square white files.
Not all of them, say half of them(it started with just 1 or 2.)
When the machine is almost finished, they all turn back into the usual icons.
Also, when i,move my mouse over the i.e.-icon the screen twitches(like when you hit renew).
This also happens when i,open a folder or something.
I,have checked for virusses and spy-ware but nothing was found.
    Never had this problem before.
Does anyone know what the problem might be?

How old is your video card? Try updating the drivers (or reinstalling them).

Also, look for th file ShellIconCache in the Windows folder. You can use the search/find files function to locate it (it's hidden), and then delete it.

    Re: Desktop-Icons

It's good that we can rule out - at least I hope so - a faulty VGA card. The ShellIconCache file is a hidden file that you will have to use Find to locate, or DOS. It lives in the Windows directory, so make sure that you tell the Find applet to search for Hidden Files and Folders.

Did you recently install any updates to the OS? Anything of note changed?

    Re: Desktop-Icons

Well,i,did upgrade the explorer to 6 and the outlook express(he did that automatically)but that`s about 2 months ago.
But there`s another strange thing that`s happened when i,was downloading stuff, all of a sudden the machine could`nt take it anymore and bailed out.
He closed the explorer and did a half ass reboot,i,mean he through everyting out and then came back.
Whitout totally rebooting itself and then some of the little icons down in the right corner disapeared.
They come back when i,reboot the machine myself.
I,think this is a memory problem(sd-ram),i,have 128mb(I,know that`s not much for running Winme).
Because when i, empty the temp-folder and history between downloads,i,don`t have this problem.
I,never work with DOS(i,don`t know what to do with it,so i,stay away from it).
I,know there are hidden files in windows and i,know you can make them visible, but i, don`t know what a find applet is i,know search but not find.
Maybe you can explaine where this find applet is and how to use it?
Last quistion for now;Do you think this problem is reason enough to do a totall system-restore?
Because the problem started last saturday, maybe if i,restore to let`s say wednesday the problem might be gone.

Thank`s so far for your help and information:Liberator.

    To make hidden files visible:
Explorer > Tools > Folder Options > View tab and select "Show hidden files and folders"

    To search for files:
Start > Search > For Files and Folders

(At a guess - I have not got ME installed.)

Found,ShellIconCache and deleted it,but it made no difference.
Set my pc back 2 weeks,no difference either.
The icons still come up as square white files.
Does anybody know any other solutions?

    Re: Desktop-Icons

Did you reboot your machine after deleting the "ShellIconCache" file?
If not, do it and you may see a difference.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
