Understanding Islam

For anyone who wants to get a basic history of Islam and shed their misconceptions about the faith and its believers, I highly recommend the book "Islam: A Short History", by Karen Armstrong, published in 2000. Ms. Armstrong is one of the world's foremost scholars on regligious affairs and gives a clear and balanced view of the development of Islam and the genesis of the conflicts between Islamic movements like the Taliban and Western society.

And if you read the reviews on Amazon, you can get just as many opposite views! This is a quite controversial book, apparently.

I read her earlier book A History of God, which traces the development of monotheistic religions, and I recently started The Battle for God, which traces the history of fundamentalist movements in the monotheistic religions. Both are somewhat dense reading, but not if you enjoy computer books.

Interesting. Fortunately, I picked the book up in the bookstore rather than through Amazon, so I was spared the negative reviews. I can't understand what makes it controversial either, but then I often fail to see why looking at both sides makes something controversial. I haven't read her other books yet, but I look forward to them.
