MS Messenger (OE 6)

I run Windows XP Home edition on my PC. I have OE 6 installed. I downloadeda critical security update for MS Meesenger 4.6 and now every time I start OE, Zone Alarm reports Messemger is trying to act like a server. I turned Windows Messenger off at stratup and running in the background.

How can I get my PC to stop trying to run Messenger.

If you go to Outlook Exprexss, on the menu , Tools, Options and on the 'General' tab, clear the check mark at 'Automatically log on to Windows Messenger'. See attachment

I did what you suggested and rebooted my computer and still I get notification from Zone Alarm that Messenger wants access to the internet.

I checked that the box was still empty.

Do you have any other ideas.

After searching the Microsoft Knwoledge base I cam up with this article (Q302089). It appears that unchecking the box only works on Messenger 4.0. For Messenger 4.5 or higher a registry edit is necessary.

I was wondering why DaveA's solution did not work. I found a Microsoft Knowledge Based article that indicates that only a registry edit would stop Messenger 4.6 from starting up with Outlook Express

I think that the normal programs that one can fix the regular way (uncheck/check,etc) are the majority...but then there are those like MSN Messenger that likes to make the computer user have fits and kaniptions (sp?)and generally make life more 'interesting' for the average user. <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

The fix I posted will start messenger but NOT log in. The only way to stop this action, is to REMOVE messenger. Using the method posted in the thread above will remove it. Remember that this is part of IE and Windows XP, it comes with the package. It may be one of those benefits that some people do not want.
