When I have "show all" clicked I sometimes see a small square dot to the left of the start of a paragraph - what is this signifying and how can I get rid of it?

The square dot is quite useful actually: it's an indication that the paragraph has one of the following applied (either manually or from its underlying style) to it: (a) keep lines together, ([img]/forums/images/smilies/cool.gif[/img] keep with next, © page break before.
Like most formatting characters, you're usually better off learning to appreciate it for what it is than wanting to get rid of it.

I agree totally with DaveW - learn to love them. You will never understand the file until you can see all the formatting marks.
However, if you can't work with them on, you can turn them off by going into your Tools | Options | View (Nonprinting characters) and make sure that both 'Paragraph marks' and 'All' are unchecked.Andrew Lockton, Chrysalis Design, Melbourne Australia
