Hide inactive icons (Windows XP Pro)

I have a problem with the hide inactive icons button, when I Install Windows it isthere, but as I load a programme it disappears. It is not related to any one application it happens what ever I install and I am not alone I have two friends with the same problem. Is there a way to get it back without re-installing

    Thanks in anticipation

Right-click anywhere on your taskbar (but not on the icon) and from pop-up menu choose Properties. Usually Taskbar tab is open, if not, click on it. On the bottom of the window check "Hide inactive Icons" checkbox under "Notification Area". You can also choose which icons to hide clicking "Customize..." button.

Thank you for your help, but when the little chevron disappears the hide active icons is already ticked. but I hasten to add 3 days later it appeared again as mysteriously as it had gone away
    Thanks anyway
