Incrementing a numeric field (Outlook 2000)

I've created a task form with a job# value field. I need that field to auto increcment on the next "new form".

I'm stuck on how to do this. I've searched past posts and haven't found anything relevant.

In other words, the last form was say #2003. The next time anyone in this public folder creates a task, I want it to automatically be numbered 2004 and so on.

you'll need something to keep count - typically VBA uses a text file on the hard drive to track the last # used. For Outlook, you may be able to use a hidden form or can use a text file. In either case, you need to update it after each form is created and read it to create the next form.

Is this a file that should be on the mail server, or does each users computer need to see it?

What if two people on the network need to access the form at the 'same' time?

it would need to be in a location all users had access to.

if 2 accessed it at the *exact* same time, you'll get two numbers the same. if one accesses it and writes the new number a split second before # 2, all is will

So are you saying if it was on the mail server (Which all have access to), ONE file would suffice? Do you by chance have an example of the VB required to do this or should I post this to the VB Board.

I am VERY green in the VB department. Thanks for your help!

There's a MS KB article Q201093 that discusses a number of options, along with the pro/con of each. You can get this at http://support.microsoft.com. Good luck!

Thanks, we had a programmer here able to beat it through VB. I'll let him know about the article.
