IMPORTING WORD DOC TO ACCESS PROBS (WORD 2K TO ACCESS 2K)

Hi, Attached document needs to be put into Access 2k or Excel 2k. I have hundreds of these monographs to put into db and analyze. I have tried importing but I lose data. Bold text on left needs to be field names and following field names (some have parathenses after them) is text or tables. Hope I am providing enough info.

    thanks

The data is not really structured enough for it to be automatically imported. Was it in some other format before, like HTML, that had separate fields for the field names and data? Is it all in one document? What are the prospects (budget) for buying a data scraping tool rather than coding this by hand?

Re: IMPORTING WORD DOC TO ACCESS PROBS (WORD 2K TO ACCESS 2K)

Thanks for responding...I am fairly new to Office applications but have learned Access somewhat (no VBA) and I would like to do the rest of my data entry in Access along with analysis. Another company gave me the file and I have been adding to it in Word. Now, I have added so much that it is getting hard to maneuver around in Word. Just a thought, can I somehow use Mail Merge in Word for my existing data and transfer that to Access form??? I know I need my data in .txt or spreadsheet format to import to Access and THEN make my form. Wish I would have known that before I did all that typing! <img src=/S/bingo.gif border=0 alt=bingo width=15 height=22> .
No real money for data scraping tool...if I did have money, what is that and where can I find it?

Data scraping (or is it shaping?) tools make sense of loosely structured text files (such as printouts) and help you define rules to export into more usable formats.

If all your data is in one Word document and you have consistently used the same field names, you should be able to add some structure to your document quickly by first adding a tab between your field name and whatever comes after it (e.g., global find and replace). With tabs come easy table conversions, and with nice consistent table columns come happy VBA routines. So, if you can get every page to consistent have field<tab>data for everything, we loungers can probably come up with something to ease the pain of conversion. Or maybe Access will do it on its own at that point.

I agree -- this shouldn't be too onerous. Follow Jsher's advice. Make sure your fields are consistent -- you'll have to modify each document by hand, but after text to table conversion by Selecting your text, then [Click] Table Menu [Click] Convert, [Click] text to table, you will be able to tweak the result and paste into Excel and retrieve the saved file into Access (at least that's how I would do it). You won't "have to" use VBA at all if you don't want...
