    From 97 do I go to 2000 or XP? (97 sr2)

I am in an office w/ 1,000+ users. We have 97 and we need to go to 2000 or XP. I have been all over the place but cannot find anything that tells me which to go to. I hear more horror stories about XP than 2000 but by the time we implement it there will probably be yet another version. Help! I need to find resources that will help that are NOT sponsored by Microsoft. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

Do you own a license and media for Office 2000? AFAIK, you can no longer buy a site license for Office 2000. Finding individual retail copies in that quanity would be difficult and they'd require activation.

From a business point of view, I'd buy a site license for the newest version, why make a huge investment in old technology?

There are many obstacles to consider, and one of the major: which OS are you using and are you planning to move to Windows XP? If so, Office XP is an option (you can save some $$$ on the future upgrades

I would never trust an Operating System or Program like Office that includes the Registration/Activation Wizard. That code could have bugs that will cause all 1000 of those users to not be able to use the program some day. I have Office 2000, but will not go to any newer release until that monstrosity is removed. If it is not removed, and I need to upgrade, I will be moving to Linux and one of its Office type products.

However, you may have a real problem in finding that many licenses for O2K. The only place I could find one additional copy that I needed was on eBay.

As noted by others, I don't think you have a choice at this point, unless a large dot com with good records went out of business near you...

Microsoft is changing its volume licensing significantly after July 31, 2002. After that time, they say there will be no more "upgrades" that you haven't subscribed to in advance ("Software Assurance"), only new full priced (or volume priced) licenses. Thus, there is a bit of time pressure if you are going to get XP to get in now before the Upgrade Advantage program expires.

    Getting to the Latest Version

    Upgrade Eligibility, Volume Upgrade

We generally rely on OEM copies of Office, as we find that the computers typically don't outlast a generation of Office! But for the number of desktops you're talking about, you probably can do better dealing with MS directly.
