    Windows 98

i don't use my A drive very often as I have CDRW. However I tried to get into it yesterday and find I can't open a floppy disk. I'm set up to single click to get into programs so just putting my cursor on an icon "selects" it, then a click opens the program. Now when I go into "My Computer" and put the cursor on the "A" drive icon my computer "locks up". I am able to unlock it with Ctrl-Alt-Del. I am able to get into other parts like "D" drive, Control Panel, etc--just having trouble with the"A" drive. Any suggestions? Thanx, Russ

    Re: Windows 98

There are many causes to this. It can be hardware or software problem. Please answer:

    1. Can you read floppy from DOS (when you choose Shut Down | Restart in DOS Mode, then insert floppy and type DIR A: )?

    2. Can you read floppy from DOS under Windows (that one from Start | Programs | MS-DOS Prompt)?

    3. If not (in both cases) is the light on the floppy drive on when you are trying to access it or not?

    4. If you can access floppy from DOS, but not from Windows, it is probably a problem with your Windows installation. Run Scandisk first (Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Scandisk), then System Files Checker: click Start | Run, type:
    sfc
and hit Enter. Then perform "Scan for altered files"

I am unable to access a drive in either way. I will try to run Scandisk but should I assume I have a hardware problem if this doesn't work? I suspect I'll have to take it in to the doctor. These things are great when they are working right but sure are frustrating when they aren't! Appreciate your help! <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>
