when opening up this 1 file opens a new file (excel 97 - sr2)

For this 1 user - when the user opens up this 1 file - each time this particular file is opened
another new file/or worksheet is opened.

theres no code behind this file -
so I'm wondering it its an option set with just this particular file that when its opened - create a new excel file.
any ideas? thanks in advance Diana

Can you give us a little more information?

How is the file being opened? By double clicking in Explorer, or using File Open in Excel?

What do you mean by "another file/or worksheet is opened?" Does it open a new file, or does it add a worksheet to the file being opened? If it opens another file, is it a new workbook or another existing workbook? What is the name of the other file that is being opened?

What do you mean by "theres no code behind this file?" Where did you look for the code? Did you look in all of the event routines in all of the object modules?

Does this happen if this file is opened on a different PC? Does it happen on any other workbooks, or just this one?

    Hi Diana,

I do not know of an option/setting to create a new book at file open.

Is it only one user? What happens when the user tries to open a blank workbook? Has the user tried holding down the shift key when opening the file?

    Diana...

Are you talking about opening a file and then in the title bar you see something like "FileName:2.xls?" Where there is actually a second copy (or 3rd or more) of the file? If so, just make sure that the one that is displayed is the one with the number after it and then close it. Keep doing that until you only have the one left that says "FileName.xls."

Re: when opening up this 1 file opens a new file (excel 97 - sr2)

    HI ya
the file is being opened in pc-docs - document management software.
For this 1 excel file - when you double click to open (in pc-docs)
    - in the menu Window - there is 1. & the file name & 2nd window which is a blank file.

For all other excel files , we open exactly the same way by double clicking on the excel files in pc-docs
when we go to menu Window - there is only the 1 window opened & that is the current file.
So it must be file specifc? DIana

Is pc-docs a document management system? When you say "- in the menu Window - there is 1. & the file name & 2nd window which is a blank file" is that a pc-docs window? If so, it sounds like a pc-docs issue, not an Excel issue.

Re: when opening up this 1 file opens a new file (excel 97 - sr2)

When I open up the problem child file-
in window 1. is the filename &
    it creates a window 2. Book1.

It isnt really a pc-docs issue as it would be happening to all the excel files being opened up via pc-docs.
I've copied file to local hard drive & to open file I bypassed pc-docs & its still doing opening up with a new book.
    any ideas? Diana

I can only think of two possibilities.

1- What you are double clicking on is a shortcut, and the shortcut is to the Excel program, and the command line in the shortcut specifies the two files to be opened.

2- There is code in the files Open Event routine that is opening the second file.

See if the original XL file was saved with more than one window being displayed. XL has been known to give the appearance that more than one XL file is opened with the same name. You should be able to view this from the Windows dropdown in XL.
