IF Field (97 Sr2)

    I am trying to use a fill-in field to get a response from a user the use an IF field to insert a specific phrase dependent on the users input - but I can't get it to work properly. This is what I have so far:

    {SET AB {FILLIN "Do you want to be in A or B?"}}{IF {AB}="A" "inserts phrase A " "inserts phrase B" * MERGEFORMAT}

    The only answer I can get all the time is "inserts phrase B". I've tried using and ASK field instead of FILL-IN, I've tried with/without quotes and spaces - obviously everything but the right thing. Can someone pls help here? What am I doing wrong? Am I using the correct tools?

    Thanks
    Nick

    I would suggest investigating the AutoTextList field. Charles just pointed someone at a useful page for this at the MVPS site

    Your field probably works OK, but the problem is that the FILLIN or ASK field only "fires" when it is updated (F9). Your users don't see the FILLIN/ASK field, so you'd have to instruct them to select the relevant part (or all) of the document and type F9.

    Alternatives:

AutoTextList, as suggested by Andrew Lockton.

A macro which asks the user for input (InputBox); you can either run the macro automatically when the document is opened, or assign it to a toolbar button.

A userform with a listbox or combobox and an OK button, and some code behind it.[/list]
