    Computer Freezes

When I turn on my daughter's computer it goes through the boot process and when the main screen comes on everything is frozen. The mouse won't move and when you press the windows key it depresses the start button on the taskbar but nothing from there. Using Win98SE. Any help appreciated !!!

Can you start up in safe mode?

    Re: Computer Freezes

I've used this and it has worked in most cases, but no guarantees.

When you start the PC, hold down the [Ctrl] key until you are sure Windows has finished opening. (I wait for the disk activity to almost stop.) This will prevent any auto-start programs from starting up. You may then have a working system, if so read on.

From "My Computer" right click C: and select properties. On the General tab you should have a button reading "Disk Clean UP", click this and delete whatever is recommended.

Run a defrag, either from the "Tools" tab or from Start -Programs - Accessories - System. This should also test the integrity of the drive and advise if it is necessary to run "error-checking" from "Tools" or "ScanDisk" from the Start Menu.

Hope this is of some help.
