    Compare docs-message=fields longer than 750 chara

    HIya
    1 of our users is 2 comparing documents.
    The user opens the 1st doc & compares it to the 2nd doc.
    When user selects the 2nd doc to compare,
    before the 2nd doc is opened the following message appears:
    'Compare Documents encountered one of more fields with content longer thatn 750 characters. Word could not track changes for these fields.'

    This message appeared once before for another user - it was resolved as the field was the table of contents & the TOC was very large.
    Once we deleted the toc & compared the docs no message appeared.

    However this time there were no TOC's in the files.
    THe files are only 30 pages long & the only fields in the docs are the page number fields.
    ie I cant see anything nothing out of the ordinary in the docs

    I had a look on microsofts msdn - applied there workarounds - needless to say it didnt work.
    any ideas? thanks in advance Diana

    Maybe there is some unobvious field in one of the documents? Try this to retrieve a list of the fields and how "long" they are. (The error handler is needed for fields that do not yield a "result" such as index markings.)
    <pre>Sub ListFieldSizes()
    Dim fld As Field, intLen As Integer
    On Error Resume Next
    For Each fld In ActiveDocument.Fields
    intLen = Len(fld.Result)
    If Err.Number = 0 Then
    Debug.Print "Field #" & fld.Index & "=" & fld.Result & " [" & intLen & "]"
    Else
    Err.Clear
    Debug.Print "Field #" & fld.Index & "=" & fld.Code & " [" & Len(fld.Code) & "]"
    End If
    Next
    End Sub</pre>

    Re: Compare docs-message=fields longer than 750 chara

    I've run into the same problem and am convinced that Mr Gates has arranged that we will receive this misleading message when the files have such a discrepancy that the block of inserted or deleted text is too large for the compare program to handle.

    I created module to save a version of each document in a temporary place, then unlink all the fields and then do the compare. Therefore you will never have the message again about the field being too long.
