Fields !!! (Word 97)

Hi,

We have inserted many fields into word document (ie., Insert->Field).
These fields are not getting updated when we add info and save, and reopen the document.
(Fields get updated if F9 is pressed but not automatically).

For eg: we inserted a field REVNUM which shows how many times document got saved, but this doesnt get updated unless i press F9 after selecting the field.

Any way out of this.

I don't think you can do this in Word the same way you would in XL, ie so that it automatically updates links when you open the document (at least, you can by adding a line in the VBE, but not using the standard Word interface).

However, you CAN automatically update the fields every time you print the document - Tools, Options, Print, 'Update fields', OK.

I think Word works on the basis that you don't *need* to update the fields until you've finished editing the document and want to print the final edition, so it doesn't bother to update things until then. It does the same with 'Page X of Y' page numbering - it won't update the 'Y' figure until you print.

The quickest way to update your fields when you open is just to press Ctrl-A, F9 (select all, update fields).

An alternative to printing the document is to just File, Print Preview. As Beryl noted, first ensure Tools, Options, Print, 'Update fields', is OK.

You can also record a macro named AutoOpen that does Select-All, F9, Ctrl-Home. Be sure the macro is saved in your document and not in normal.dot when you record it.
