Start .dot file from browser (Office 2000, W SR-1)

    Hi,

    I have encountered a problem:

Using a browser, like Internet Explorer, I cannot start my Word Templates using this http-address.
Do I have to use any special switches or what?

Can any one help me and tell how to do it!

    Thanks in advance!

    best regards

I have had this problem in the past and thought this MUST be easy. I did a fairly extensive search and found nothing. I would love to know how to do this with a relative hyperlink.

I suspect that you could do it with scripting but the workaround that I use is to hyperlink to a bookmark pointing at the template with the /n switch added to the target in the bookmark.

Are you trying to open the template for editing or have it create a new document based on the template?

First, you need to have the browser direct the template or document to Word for processing. You do this in Windows Explorer, under Tools|Folder Options...|File Types by turning off "browse in the same window." (See below.)

Second, if you want to click on a template and create a new document, you have to do a few tricks. See this recent post for more information.

    Thanks Andrew,

I also have been looking for a long time without anyone seem to have droped into the problem.

I have made a workaround as follows:

A document (filename.doc) is coded with the following code to start the template wanted:

Sub cmdActivateTemplate_Click() A command button on the document
    ActivateTemplate
    End Sub

    Sub ActivateTemplate()
    Dim WTemplatePath As String
    Dim UTemplatePath As String

'Procedure for starting a template from your WorkgroupTemplates path
    WTemplatePath Options.DefaultFilePath(wdWorkgroupTemplatesPath)
    WTemplatePath WTemplatePath & ""
Documents.Add WTemplatePath "Letter-Col-no.dot" Template to start

    ThisDocument.ActiveWindow.Close save changes:=False
    End Sub

I'm afraid I did not realy understand your description properly. But your solution may be the same as mine??

Where do I find the description of the switches? Have looked in Word & VBA Help, but in vain.

    Best regards
    Bj

    Thanks,

The first I have done, the next I have briefly looked through a lot of the "answers" to the problem. It looks as "the tricks" are fairly difficult for an amateur to understand quickly. But I will look through and see if I can implement a solution.

The best way had to be using a switch getting the browser to understand that it should give Word the information to treat the file as a dot file.

    Thanks

Thanks a lot Andrew. I will try this when I get a chance.

I have planted the question at Microsoft newsgroup but in vain so far.

    Thanks again.

    Best regards
