Office 2000/Word

I work in a middle school. One of my users tries to call up word by clicking on her icon. What comes up is a document she previously worked on. We cannot delete the document. We cannot overwrite it and save it with a new name. Every time she clicks on the word icon, that particular document comes up every time. Does anyone know what to do here? I really could use some help! Thanks.

Are you sure that the icon is not a shortcut to that document? If the icon is on the desktop try right-clicking on it, click properties and see what the path includes on the icon. You might also try using Find to hunt for winword.exe and see if that launches Word when you click it. If it does, then create a new shortcut. Otherwise you might be looking at the possibility of virus pranks. Has this machine been virus infected? You may find it worthwhile to virus scan it with current .dat files for your virus scanning software.

Quick thoughts:
It is not in the Tools/Options/File Locations/Startup folder, is it?
Have you tried naming/deleting after a reboot and before Word has been opened?
Was the doc ever subject to a Word crash and 'auto-recovered' ?

Does each user have their own copy of Normal.dot? If so, check this file and see if it was over written.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

When your user starts Word and this particular document comes up, what is the name of the document (in the title bar)?

If it says "Document 1", then along the lines of Dave's suggestion, it's probable that somehow the user amended their Normal.dot.

And if that's not the case:
How (and from where) are you trying to delete it, when you can't delete the document?
How are you trying to overwrite it and save it with a new name? Are you getting any message boxes when you try to save it?
