once it's activated, you can save the activation if you reformat, by locating and saving the file called data.dat
This is not a feature, it is a monstrosity and is the reason that I have not and will never install Windows or Office XP.

The data.dar file changes from time to time.
THe oroginal was created om my system on 29 Jan 2002 and another version was created on 1 March 2002.
I have not done a re-install of Office XP, but I did install VS.Net Pro on 1 March 2002, so the file does get updated to reflect software, as well as hardware changes.
