Autotext (Word 2000)

I only recently discovered the joy of Autotext! Can I create different autotext libraries? - folders? - and use them at will while working in different templates? Or should everything always be available in each template?

Also, when I add an Autotext entry it isn't there sometimes when I go to use it. What am I doing or not doing?

Thanks as always for the great advice I know I'm going to receive!

Have you tried searching the Lounge on AutoText? There have been more than quite a few postings on the subject - including in the last week or two. Among other things, their availability is dependent on the style applied when the AutoText was created.

Yes - have checked back pages and pages. Posts do not address my questions.

Yeah, a search on "Autotext" isn't too revealing.

You can create templates that hold autotext, load them as global templates in startup and call that autotext from macros in other templates -- so yes, you can build extensive libraries of autotext.

    Loungers -- any good links?

While it is true that I am also partly Greek, we clearly are speaking different languages. FWIW this post in particular gave me a practical insight into the issues regarding AutoText. There is also this link in this post about a month ago. To actually find where in the offsite link the resource is, you have st scroll down half of a VERY long page: to find about 15 or so on- and offsite links. HTH, but if you have already worked your way through both of those I am out of ideas.

    Re: Autotext (Word 2000)

I haven't visited the other links provided by others on this thread but here is a brief overview on my thoughts.

Autotexts (ATs) are held in templates. When a document is open, the AT entries available are those in Normal.dot, the attached template AND those in any add-ins.

This means that you can have several sets of AT available when working in a document depending on which template is attached and which add-ins are active (Normal is always active).

If you want AT libraries then I would be using Add-ins to carry them. You could turn them on or off as required and have them available across all documents.

If an AT entry isn't there when you go to use it - make sure you can see the whole list and not just the ones created with the style your cursor is currently in. If that doesn't solve it, find out where you put the AT entry. The biggest trick when creating AT entries is to pay attention to which template it goes into.

Nicely put, Andrew. And thanks Unkamunka for elucidating the links.

    Re: Autotext (Word 2000)

2 quick things & hopefully I'm not repeating what others have said.

    1. When you create Autotext entries, they will be in categories. The name of the category is the style that they were created in. Therefore be careful what style you use when you create Autotext. If you create entries in Style1, & your cursor is in a paragraph of that style, you won't immediately see entries that are in another style. If your cursor is in the "normal" style, you should see a list of your categories when you click on Insert/Autotext...

    2. If you save your entries in a template other than a global template, you won't see the entries unless that template is either the attached tempalate or is added under Tools/Templates & add-ins.

Those could be the reasons you are not seeing certain entries.
