mouse and keyboard do not work

A friend's system (WIN 98 SE) is not recognizing either the mouse or the keyboard. The problem started when the mouse plug got pulled out while the tower was being moved. My friend got the error message saying there was no mouse detected. She turned off the system and plugged the mouse back in. She continues to get the error message. We have tried a different mouse without success. And the keyboard does not work. Any suggestions?

I'd guess that they were plugged back to the wrong connectors.

Switch the connections, might do the trick.

Interestingly enough, and further to what's already been posted, you can toast the PS/2 controller on the motherboard if you unplug the mouse or keyboard while the system's powered up. I've been lucky for a number of years.....I think......

Does the machine have a USB port, and would testing with a USB keyboard or mouse be an option? The alternative..... yikes.....

I second (third) that. I once had an outside tech unplug the keyboard while a PC was running. He'd also done it "a hundred times'.

Result was a blown rail and hence a new mother-board. The company, by way of apology, doubled the RAM to a hugh 16Mb. (It was a few years ago.)

Check to see if there are any broken pins on both the mouse and keyboard cables. Also the sockets may have been damaged, with may mean a new mother board. Look to see if the sockets appear to be ok.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
