Change Desktop Icons for Office XP Apps? (Win XP)

I've always been a big interface customizer, especially with desktop elements, so I've been frustrated to find that I can't change the icons for any of the Office XP applications as I could with previous versions (or any other program, for that matter!). When I right click and go to Properties, the Change Icon option is greyed out for Word, Excel, Outlook, etc. I tried making a shortcut directly to the program file itself, such as winword.exe, and then I could change the icon, but the icon wouldn't launch the program! I searched the MS Knowledge Base to no avail.

This is not a major problem, but there is bound to be a simple answer to it. Perhaps MS has fixed it so the icons can't be changed? They are such dull and uninteresting icons. I'd love to have something prettier on my desktop and Start menu. Can anyone help with this?

    Thanks,

because of the self repairing features of office, the icons don't point to the actual program exe's and because of their special status (like outlook always has been) you can't change the icons. make a shortcut to the launcher icon if you want to change the icons.

Ah! Self-repairing --- that explains it.
What do you mean by "lauuncher" icon?

I think what is being said is that the original MS Office shortcuts are unchangeable and appear as the upper example below.
Create a new shortcut to (e.g.) Excel and you can change most of the parameters, including the shortcut icon - as the lower example.

I agree with Lief. You can create a shortcut to the EXE File, and you can change the icon for it. I didn't have any problems with these shortcuts not starting Word.

It worked when I did as suggested and created a new shortcut from scratch. Thanks!
It would not work when simply copying the original icon from the Start menu and pasting the shortcut to it on the desktop. Things look much better now.
