    Normal dot changing (Word 2002)

Lately, every time I close Word 2002, I get the message that Normal dot has been changed do I want to accept the changes. I get this message even if I open Word and close it without opening a document. What could be causing Word to think something is changing normal dot? I even accepted the changes once but the message still returns.

Re: Normal dot changing (Word 2002)

I don't have 2002, but this issue generally arises from an add-in. Look in Tools/Templates & add-ins & see what is loading. Go to that folder & remove all the add-ins temporarily. Then restart Word. If that stops the problem, start adding them back in one at a time until you find the cause. Some add-ins make changes to normal.dot each time they're loaded.

Another cause could be a virus. You should check your machine with an up to date antivirus application.

    Hope this helps.

Do a search on "normal.dot save changes" or variations thereof. You'll find a lot of discussion on this topic. Likely causes though are virus, other macro code or a corrupt normal.dot.

Re: Normal dot changing (Word 2002)

Word thinks something is changing normal.dot because something is changing normal.dot. The change may be innocuous, or not. I would not save changes and try tracking it down.

If that fails, make a backup copy of your current normal.dot. Then try opening and closing Word a number of times, each time allowing it to save changes to normal.dot. My guess is a poorly-written add-in but a virus is possible.
