Closing a document closes Word. (2000 sr1)

Afternoon all.

I have a user saying that, on a regular but not consistent basis, she closes a document (using the "close" button on the toolbar or the X for the document window (not the application window)) and instead of closing just that document, the Word application itself is closed.

I have no idea where to even start with this. This is a proficient user, so I believe her when she tells me what she is doing to close the document.

Any thoughts?

Well...unless there's some automation going on... it does seem that the most likely scenario is hitting the higher X when there is only one doc open. Slipping the mouse a bit is so easy...

For many users it's trickier to close using the "x's" now. It sure is harder to explain to new users! Here is a link to a download that will let you change the "x's" to the way they worked in previous versions.

Yes, that was my thought, but she swears she's not, and that she gets the same behaviour using the "Close" button on the toolbar (we've added that) or File|Close.

Hi Klyjen:
You might try seeing if the x & toolbar button, etc. are really assigned to FileClose or some other command (like FileExit). See <!post=this post,127986>this post<!/post> for how to determine the associated command.

Also, it may be that different commands are associated with different documents or templates. I'd remove everything from the startup folder & rename normal.dot & see if the problem persists. There might be a recent add-in that is causing a problem.

If it gets to the point where you need to disable the App close button in order to troubleshoot this one, you might need something like this:
