Suspend only works one time (Windows XP)

I have an IBM ThinkPad A22P and I recently upgraded from 2000 to XP. When I close the laptop or select 'stand by' from the 'turn off computer' menu the first time, everything works normally. When I open the laptop, windows starts back up just fine, but if I try to stand by again without restarting, the system freezes on "Preparing to stand by ..." dialog. Any ideas how to remedy this situation?

    Thanks,

    Stimilon
