    Downloading progs that save funny

I have been unable to run programs which download in zip format and, once unzipped, have an icon that looks like the Windows Splash screen but white instead of blue.

Does anyone know what this "white" splash screen is and whether there's anything I can do about it?

    Hi Maria,

It is difficult to answer to your question because you mixed up several things.

First of all, what you see is the default icon with Windows logo - that means Windows doesn't know what kind of file it is.

Windows splash screen is a picture (bitmap) with the size 320 x 400 pixels. There are three of them: logo.sys ("Windows is starting..."), logow.sys ("Please wait while your computer shuts down") and logos.sys ("It is safe to turn off...").
Icons are small pictures (bitmaps) also (usually 32 x 32 pixles) and are embedded in application files (exe or dll). To see icons resided in your applications, you can use, for example, ResourceHacker or similar program.

After you downloading ZIP and unzipping it, one of the unzipped files must have the name "Setup", "Install" or similar ("BlaBlaSetup" for example). Double-click on it. If you don't see such file, look for executable with its original icon or generic blue window frame. Double-click on it, and see what's happened. If you doesn't see any executable at all, your ZIP is not containing a full program or this program is not compatible with Windows.

I just clicked on these programs and got a message window saying they are not valid Win32 programs. Oh well, they looked like really neat utilities.

I said splash screen because that's how I think of the Windows logo. I hadn't thought of it as a logo but now I know.

    Thank you so much.
