Hateful Moving textbox (Word 2000)

I would like to know if there is a way to keep a text box in place. My situation is this...I have a document with a form field that when locked the user must tab to each field and fillin. At the bottom of one page of my 5 page report I have a textbox that has no fields within it. Just a textbox that a person can put a signature in, on a underscore line, after its printed. I've tried right-clicking the text box and choosing the normal options like, hide behind text, or bring to front...after attempting each choice, I've even tried to put the text box between two section breaks. Still when a person attempts to type too much text in the last fillin field, or presses shift and enter for manual line breaks for a new paragraph within the last fillin text field above this text box, it shoves my text box for a hard copy signature onto the next page. I've also tried to put it into the footer just on this page...it is page 2 of 5, and not have it show up on all other pages...but I am having trouble with that. It actually is a problem on two pages of my report, (there are two of these giving me problems...ones on page 2 and ones on page 4). How do I get this into the footer just on those 2 pages. It seems to work when I try section breaks above and below on one page, but not the other. The proper steps for inserting this into a footer on certain pages only would be really benificial. If anyone can help, I sure would appreciate it. Example attached.

Firstly you need to view object anchors, so you can see which paragraph this text box is part of. Do this with Tools => Options => View => Object Anchors.

Then select the text box and move its anchor so that it is part of a paragraph that won't move off the page, for example the heading "Narrative", or even "Property Section".

Now go to the text box properties, and click the Advanced button on the layout tab. Make sure that you have checked "Lock Anchor" and you have cleared "Move object with text".

Here is a copy of your document with these changes made, does it work the way you want?

This worked absolutely perfectly. However, the stuff on the next page keeps scooting down. I know then that I must anchor whats on the next page as well then, but I've anchored the 2 items to the top, to the bottom, and no anchor works, it still gets shoved to the next page, and so on and so forth though out the document to the very end. I try to anchor the things on the second page to the things on the first page, and that doesn't help. It moves everything up. I am going to attach 2 of the 5 pages in the report and you tell me what you think. When you get into the first narrative section and you try to press Shift and Enter within the field, it works fine until you get to the 8th or 9th line of pressing shift and enter, for manual line breaks...then it starts moving stuff on the next pages down a page...would you peek at it. It is a template, but I saved it to send you as a zipped word document example.
thanks

Re: Hateful Moving textbox (Word 2000)

Part of your problem was caused by a large numbr of empty paragraphs at the bottom of the first page. If you unprotect your document and view paragraph marks then you can select these and delete them.

After the extra paragraph marks have been deleted you can completely fill the "Narrative" box and continue typing text to fill page 1. If you type any additional lines then these get placed at the top of page 2 and the whole of the original page 2 gets pushed to page 3. What do you want to happen in this case?

You were right on the money. Thank you Stuart for the help. It has finally allowed me to finish this project, and it has been long and hard. But if it wasn't for Keven, Jscher, and many others, including you...I would have lost my marbles long time ago. I just want you to know that nothing but great things pass my lips when I speak to everyone I know about this place. And I do, spread the word about how smart you folks are. And how you try so hard to carry us through, even when I know at times you wish you could reach through the screen and "pop" us sometimes to wake us up...hehe...Hale to all the Dudes and Dudettes at woody's lounge. Its the most awesome place on the web.

Your kind words are appreciated - one of the challenges for techies is when you are working in a relatively isolated situation and end up being the resident expert. When you get stumped, there isn't anyone to turn to, but the Lounge fills that need so well - I am constantly amazed at the depth of knowledge of people like Charlotte, Jscher, SammyB, Kevin, Wylly, Phil, et. al. I agree it's one of the best resources on the web!

Re: Hateful Moving textbox (Word 2000)

Your last question Stuart, about what I want to happen in this case, (a person typing more then they should?). Well we have been working on that in another thread for a couple weeks now, and several people there have helped me tirelessly. The whole idea was to "MAKE" the user stop typing after line 15 with a on exit macro. We got one to work, and on exit it does just great. It was still pushing page 2 down, but figured, these guys and gals typing this narrative should take notice of at least the On entry macro telling them NOT to type after line 15, and the comment above the field as well. If they do...well YES, they total the report. But learning about the anchors, and what they are actually good for, you have showed me something that I think might help the situation. I'm going to work with that aspect now. Thanks...if you've better or easier advice then object anchors around the objects on all the following page items after the narrative, hollar...I'm all ears.

Re: Hateful Moving textbox (Word 2000)

I'm starting to run out of ideas! Doesn't the On Exit macro work to prevent the user from entering too much text?

I think it might be easier if you had at least one paragraph on Page 2 that isn't in a text box or frame. You could then anchor the other things on the page to this.

Re: Hateful Moving textbox (Word 2000)

Thank you Stuart. That will work. The on exit macro just lop off any extra text that the user typed, but it doesn't pull the info that got pushed onto page 2 back up. I am finished with this report, and it works great. Thanks everyone
