Office XP Language Settings (Office XP)

I posted this on the Word forum, but got no response so I thought I'd try again here. After my daughter had been using Word, I noticed that 2 extra buttons had appeared on the toolbars - those that let you put text from right to left, and left to right. Also in the Font dialog box, my fonts were now split into complex and latin fonts. This is all associated with having support for other languages installed, which I hadn't done, and when I checked which languages were installed, only English was there. As I couldn't get rid of the complex and latin font options, I tried totally uninstalling Office and then reinstalling it again, making absolutely sure that I did not choose support for any other languages. However, after reinstalling, the same language options were there. Presumably there was a registry setting that needed deleting? Anyway I'm desperate to get rid of these language settings, as it's causing problems when I'm using styles in some documents - can anyone help?

When you said "totally uninstalling Office", you probably mean "using Uninstall option without any Registry cleaning", that's why all your previous Office settings was restored. True "total" uninstalling includes reformating the hard drive and a new installation of operating system and all other programs.

However, go to Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | choose Microsoft Office XP... from the list | click Change button | choose Add or Remove Features option. Then, under the Office Shared Features click on International Support and from pop-up menu choose "Unavailable; then under Office Tools choose Language Setting Tool and choose Unavailable. Click Update, OK.

I hope it will solve your problem.

Thanks for your reply - yes, I realise it wasn't a *complete* uninstall, but I don't fancy reformatting my hard drive! However, I'm afraid your suggestions don't help - international support is already not available, and English is the only language installed. I made sure of this during the reinstallation and have double checked it since to make sure it is still the case. I hadn't disabled the Language Setting Tool, but have now done so with no effect. There must be a registry setting somewhere that I can get rid of?

Did you check WINDOWS language settings?

If you are using Windows XP, look in Control Panel | Date, Time, Language and Regional Options (skip if you use Classic view) | Regional and Language options | Languages tab.

If you are using Windows 2000, look in Control Panel | Regional Options | General tab and Input Locales tab.

If you are using WIndows 95/98, look in Control Panel | Keyboard | Language tab.

Yes - I'm using Windows 98 and only English (British) is there.
