    Page breaks converting 97 to 2k (Win 98SE & Office 2k)

I downloaded a job application in Word 97 to my PC which I completed in Word 2000. Completing the form went fine. Now I want to print it and I discover the pages are not breaking correctly. I went to Tools/Options & tried to fix that under the Compatibility tab. Even when setting it to Word 97, the forms still have pages with the break too soon. How do I fix this?

    Hi Maria:
    1. Make sure that the show/hide button on your standard toolbar is depressed so you can see page breaks, etc. Otherwise, go to Tools/Options/View tab & show all under hidden.

    2. Look at your document in normal view.

    3. Now you can look through your document for manual page breaks or next page section breaks & delete them. You can just select them with the mouse while in normal view & delete them.

    4. If you still have problems, look at the first paragraph on each page & go to Format/Paragraph & see if the "page break before" box is ticked on the Line & Page Breaks tab.

    5. You might also check to see if your paragraphs have a large amount of "space after", which could cause a page break.

    6. If your text is in a table, even if you can't see the gridlines, you might have Table Properties/row tab "allow row to break across pages" unticked. This can cause large gaps.

Otherwise, you will have to describe your problem more specifically or upload the document for someone to see.

    Hope this helps.

    Maria,

In Phil's step 3, you can use Word's Find Replace feature to let Word find the page/section breaks rather than you scrolling down.
-open the Replace dialog from the Edit menu (or Ctrl+h gets it)
-check wildcards (not sure why finding page/section breaks not available w/o wildcards but it isn't in my Word 97)
-position the insertion point in the Find What box
    - click the Special button. From the menu, choose page/section breaks near the bottom (you should see a ^m in the Find box, which you could type directly if you knew what to type)
-move the insertion point to the Replace with box and put whatever you want (if you want nothing, just leave it blank)
-now click the Find Next button. If this is one of the breaks you want to Replace, just click the Replace button and then click Find Next again until you're done.

    hope this saves some time.

    Fred
