    Word templates (word 2000)

I took over the ownership of 35 company developed report style templates. There probably will be an large style update coming to these templates. Does anyone know of a way to make one a master copy and link the rest to this one to make a global update OR must I make the updates to each individually.

    Thanks for any help!

If you want to maintain 35 separate templates, I don't see any way around actually updating them. You could modify the 35 templates to consult a central source and update themselves, for example, each time they are used to create a new document. A bit tricky to come up with a protocol for doing this, but then it's fully automatic down the road.

Depending on the nature of your templates, it might be possible to reduce the number by having the user make a few choices in a dialog box. This probably would be easier to maintain in the long run, but does involve a lot of development and testing time up front, and making changes is more complex.

Hopefully someone has an easier solution!

If u make the changes to a template by using macros to make the changes, then you can apply those macros, perhaps modified, to the other templates.

If when you refer to a style update, you are talking about Word styles, you can use the Organizer to copy to other templates. Just be sure that you copy based-on styles as well as styles and that you copy each set of styles three times. (Select the styles to be copied, press the copy button, then press the copy buttan again, then press it a third time. If asked if you want to overwrite existing styles, click on Yes to All.)

A bit tedious but unless you are going to be doing it often it is probably more work than it is worth to automate.

As was already said, you could automate your templates so that when they are used to create a new document they automatically draw styles from a central repository.

I thank those that have helped me with this problem. You confirmed my suspicion that it would not be easy to automate existing templates. I will have to do each individually after setting up a master with an accurate style list and copy it into the other templates. Again Thanks. <img src=/S/salute.gif border=0 alt=salute width=15 height=20>
