Comment Position (97SR2)

Comments on a sheet open to the right. I'd like them to open to the left. How can I tell Excel the position I want for pop up comments?

Strange bit of news, really. But not altogether unexpected. You can't even move them around after they pop up. Is that your experiece too?

Yes. Particularly annoying when it pops up off the screen on the right.

If they pop up "in sight" on screen you can move them by right-click selecting "Edit Comment", then dragging the comment box outline , but it's a pain nevertheless.

Re: Comment Position (97SR2)

Now get this: if you click View>Comments they pop up at the last edit or last moved location. If you just click the cell they are attached to they pop up wherever they *#$! well please -- off to the right off the screen.

Now if you were designing this feature, wouldn't the pop-up-on-cell-click position and the View-Comments position be the same? Yikes.

Re: Comment Position (97SR2)

Have you tried using the Data Validation trick for cell comments?
I use them to document column headings and as reminders for the first couple of rows of User inputs.
When you place the cellpointer on a column heading, the Data Validation just display a nice box with my description of what the column contains. Of course, there is NO validation actually assigned - simply display the box when on that cell. You can also drag the box to where you want.

Zeddy, this is a GREAT idea! Have you figured out any way to move the box using VBA? Dosn't appear to be any properties or methods.

Re: Comment Position (97SR2)

I haven't tried it in VBA (yet) but I recall you can drag the box and it 'remembers' where you placed it relative to the cell it is 'assigned' to. I seem to recall that when you use this method e.g. to 'remind' the User what to enter into a cell (e.g. 'enter gross amount before tax' it moves nicely out of the way of the data entry cell.

I'll try the VBA next and get back to you on that.

Sam,
Assume you have assigned a comment to cell [d12]

Application.DisplayCommentIndicator = xlCommentAndIndicator

With Range("D12").Comment.Shape
.Top = 36 '72 points = 1 inch, so 36 = .5inch from top
.Left = 72 'distance from left edge of window in points
End With

..see attached small sample file

Re: Comment Position (97SR2)

Well, that's cool for comments (but ugly in that it gets reset when you hide the comment), but what about the Data Validation prompt box: can it be moved with VBA?

Re: Comment Position (97SR2)

Zed,

A fine idea. I tried it and it looks just like the comment except for the tether, arrow and little red mark. And who needs those anyway. Thanks for the tip.

Yes, this is pretty cool too. Tell me what the Hoja1.shape is. You've named it "Instructions". I don't know Excel well enough to find what the heck that "shape" is.

You say you can move it around, but I can't get that to work. How do I change the colors and text too?
