No Audio Output

Hello,

I am trying to work on my dad's computer and I am unable to play any sounds. There is a sound card installed and I have uninstalled and reinstalled the driver CD that came with the card. Then I thought that the sound (volume) had been turned down. I tried to open the volume control from the start menu/accessories/entertainment. I then went to the Win98 install disk and uninstalled then reinstalled the multimedia option from windows setup.

To no avail.

I would like to avoid reformating the hard drive.

Thanks in advance

Re: No Audio Output

Hey Mike. A bit more information if you please. What types of sounds are you trying to play CDs, .wav, MIDI ??? Is your volume control panel fully expanded for all the different sound file types?? If not, open the volume control panel and click on Options/Properties and make sure you have a dot in the Playback circle and that there is a check next to each file type except Microphone & Line In. Click OK and then be sure that none of the Mute boxes in the volume controls are checked and that the volume controls are all set to Maximum volume. Next, check all your connections and as a last resort, and I know this sounds silly, check to be sure the speakers power is turned on. I just serviced a system today with a "no sound" complaint and sure enough, the speakers power switch was OFF.

Re: No Audio Output

Thanks Doc,

Sorry for not having too much information on this. I have been under the weather. In regards to the connections, double and triple checked them. I am trying to play any sounds (CD, Midi, .wav, mp3). The CD Player will come on, and appears to play, but the volume control will not show up when I request it from the view menu on the Default cd player. When I went to launch the program, it didn't show up in my menu bar either.

I just can't seem to get any sound out of the thing.... be advised, my dad got the computer as a "deal" from a so-called "friend" , if you know what I mean.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

Re: No Audio Output

Mike,
Drop the PC on your Dad's "Friend's" foot and see if that produces any sound........ no wait, check that........
Try going into the Control Panel (Start / Settings / Control Panel) and clicking on the Multimedia folder. On the Audio tab under Playback: Preferred Device check to see if your sound card is listed and if it is select it. If not use the "Any available device" choice in the selections dropdown. Click on Advanced Properties and be sure that the correct speakers are selected. While you're in Multimedia you may want to poke around and check on how all your audio and video devices are configured. Note any changes you make, in case they have some unwanted effect on the system, so you can reset things. Best advice here is not to change anything you're not sure of.
Have FUN !!

Thanks Doc,

I would love to try the "foot" thing . I'm positive that would work. I'll try the other some time tommorrow. I really appreciate all of your help and patience.

Re: No Audio Output

Well Doc,

I finally got the chance to get to his computer and guess what... No Icon for Multimedia, figures huh? When I did re-load the multimedia from windows setup, I received an error stating "Error Loading MMSYS.CPL... A DLL Initialization routine failed. Could this also have an effect?

Any Suggestions?

Re: No Audio Output

Mike,
I had a bad feeling when you said in an earlier post "The CD Player will come on, and appears to play, but the volume control will not show up when I request it from the view menu..." that something wasn't right. Your father's "friend" is the wild card here. No telling what they've done.
The error message is the key to this. There is at least one .dll file that is corrupt or missing and is necessary to install the MMSYS.CPL or in english.... the Multi Media System Control Panel. Without that.... no MultiMedia icon in your Control Panel folder. The quick and dirty fix is to re-install Widows over itself and let the install process replace the missing or damaged system files. This can't hurt your system. It may however change some custom settings and revert some things to their default status, but nothing you can't re-tweak to your personal preferences.
If the "friend" hasn't died or left town, you might ask them what happened to the sound &/or the MultiMedia setting (depending on how computer literate they are).
Good luck !! Let me know how it turns out.

Re: No Audio Output

Doc,

I really appreciate your patience and understanding. I think that my earlier assumption was correct, data dump and re-boot . I talked to a better "friend" of "mine" and he said that I should just re-install Windows98 and fix what was wrong. I also think that someone deleted files that were shared, you know the ones (that they say are shared when you un-install a program). I would like to take this time to see if you agree with my prognosis.

Thanks for all your help.

If I ever meet my dad's friend.

Re: No Audio Output

Mike,
I think that you're on the right track now. Your friend's suggestion seems to be the easiest solution to the problem. Entirely possible that someone deleted some shared files. You didn't say which OS you are currently running, but even if Win 98 isn't an upgrade but simply a re-install it will reset the system files that are missing or trashed. You don't need to format the hard drive to reinstall. You only need to install Windows over itself. But if this is an upgrade to Win 98 then I would recommend that you format the drive and do a clean installation of Windows 98. It just works better when you do it that way. Like most computer problems, the cause will most likely remain a mystery, but the problem can be fixed.

That did the trick, reinstalled Win98 right over the old (Win98 was the original OS). I also told my dad, no one but him or myself touches that computer or .

Thanks for all of your help .

told my dad, no one but him or myself touches that computer

What an interesting coincidence....I did the same thing. There have been times when I thought that perhaps I should tell him not to touch it either!

Mike,
Glad it all worked out. If only they were all that easy !!!

Don't you know it is every parent's dream to hang around long enough to be as much of a problem to their children as their children were to them. Commonly known as "The Parents' Revenge".
