    My Network Places takes minutes to appear (WinXP Pro)

    Whenever I click on My Network Places, it takes a very long time to appear. However, if I am in an open or save dialog window and choose My Network Places, the items show immediately (makes me think it is an Explorer issue). I also created a shortcut to my workgroup and that window opens immediately. If I open a shortcut to any folder on another computer, the window opens immediately, but if I pick My Network Places from the address list, the hourglass appears and I have to wait again. <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    Any ideas would be appreciated - TIA,

    Depending of your network configuration there can be several things to slow connections.

    To speed it up, you can, for example, disable Remote Computer Task Scheduler (Q245800). To disable it, delete the following key:
    HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionExplorer RemoteComputerNameSpace{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

    When you map your network drive (or create shortcut to it) it bypasses some checks, that's why it significantly speeds your connection.

    To optimize your connections, verify Duplex settings on your NIC; disable DFS support if not used; disable IE offline browsing; if you use Novell, disable unused protocol search methods. For more information, see Enhance MS/Novell Client Performance.

    But first of all, contact your Network Administrator.
