Grouping on Protected Sheet (97- sr2)

I'm looking for a work around of what seems to be a limitation in Excel 97. I have a document (example attached) in which end users are to open the spreadsheet, input numbers, and the formulas update other cells.

The problem is I am using grouping. Each Group (A, B, C) has 3 lines of information below it. When I protect the sheet with the cells for inputting unlocked, I can no longer use my grouping feature.

Is there a work around in 97? Does one of the later versions take care of this?

These are not elegant solutions, but you could
create another sheet that summarise the data separately, rather that having it listed within the grouping.
A PivotTable would also provide this facility and would also allow you to drill down to the source data.

When I needed to do this I provided a button on the sheet. This button ran a macro that unprotected the sheet, changed the outlining and then protected the sheet again.
