big table big slowness (O2K - SR1 via Citrix and Metaframe)

Anyone use Citrix and Metaframe servers to offer MS Office to your organization? We do (yes, it's a trip), and I'm having this problem.

It looks to me like any time I have a document with a moderately large table in it (try 10 columns, 200 rows) it completely chokes. If I access the file with my locally installed Office I'm fine, but through Metaframe the delay between typing and actually viewing becomes completely ridiculous. I've played with table formatting a bit, but that hasn't helped as far as I can tell.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

We use MetaFrame and it doesn't surprise me to hear that you're having this kind of problem. Our experience has been that the combination of MetaFrame and a phone-based modem is awfully darn slow. Our people who are on cable modems or the equivalent have a much easier time of it.

I have two suggestions: 1) Any time you have a large table, use Excel if at all possible. It's easier and faster and does a better job of assembling tabular data. If you don't know Excel and you do a lot of work with big tables, it's worth taking the time to learn Excel. 2) Try working in Word's Normal view. When you use the Print Layout view, you're adding to the load and the result will be a much slower display.

Actually this is over a network that it's slow, so it really shouldn't be happening. I'll see if the Excel route works. The problem is that it's a department directory, so it is more of a Word type thing than an Excel one, but I'm sure Excel would be faster.

Our office uses Citrix and Metaframe with MS Office as does yours.

Our general recommendation is to have users download and work locally to avoid speed issues, then upload to the network.

Of course, if they don't have Office installed locally, this is not possible, but most people are either using our loaner laptops or have installed our customized setups on their own laptops or PC's.

    Angela,

We use Citrix/Metaframe and I've just tried working with a 10x200 table - no problems. It seems to work about as fast as if I try it locally.

Completely over my head, but I wonder if there are some things that can be done to optimize performance on your Citrix system, which perhaps are not currently being done? A couple of things that were done on our system, both of which I hate, are: suppress cursor blinking (I really hate that one!); limit colors to 256. I'm sure there are others things more technical. But anyway our Citrix system actually runs quite fast. (And fortunately I do 95% of my work locally anyway <img src=/S/devil.gif border=0 alt=devil width=15 height=15>).

One other setting that I have seen changed to speed up Word in such situations is to disable live scrolling with a registry entry. In Word2000 and above, the default is to use live scrolling (update screen while scrolling). The key on my machine is
    HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftOffice9.0WordOpt ions
You would have to add a DWord NoLiveScrolling with a value of 1.
