Still Having Problems with Forms and Fields in Wor (Word2K)

    Hi, everyone:

I am trying to make a cc: list in a document that I can reference in another place in the document. I made a test document by inserting a field, then formatting a style and applying that style to the field.

I then skipped a few lines and inserted a reference to the cc: list bookmark ("Insert-Links and References-Ref"). I formatted a second style (the only thing different is the font) and applied it to the reference.

I made sure that neither style was based on the Normal style.

I then protected the document and typed a list of four names, each name on a separate line. When I updated the reference field, the first, second and fourth names were in the font from the second style. The third name was in the first style.

I am extremely flummoxed. I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong. Since the cc: list changes from letter to letter, I can't put in a separate field on each line. I figured that by "defining" the first cc: list as regular text with an unlimited number of characters I could work around the different numbers of copies that are sent. My only guess at this point (and I've been working on this for the last day or so) is that I may not have the flexibility of using one field for my cc: list.

    Does anyone have any answers?

Thanks for taking the time to read this.

    Hi Cambot:
I read your other post & Stuart's response. While I agree with Stuart's approach, I think that the mergeformat switch isn't working the way you would ordinarilly expect, when you add paragraph marks to the same formfield.

What I would do is use the charformat switch in the REF field, which formats the results of the REF field the same way as the first character in the field. In this case, that character is the "R" in REF.

    Therefore, take your template:
    1. Unprotect it.
    2. Press Alt+F9 so you can see the field codes.
    3. Change the word "mergeformat" to "charformat" (no quotes).
    4. Select the word "REF" & apply TNR font to it.
    5. Press Alt+F9 to switch back to field results & save the template.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi, Phil!

    That appears to do it!

Thank you (and Stuart) so very much for your help. Is there a book you can recommend that I buy for Word that would have something like this in it?

    Thanks again!

    Hi Cambot:
Using Word 2000 by Bill Camarda, published by Que has a lot of information. It tells you how to use various features, has all the switches, etc. It doesn't tell you much of what goes wrong (i.e. not very critical).

Using Office 2000 by Ed Bott & Woody Leonard, published by Que is also excellent, but covers all of Office 2000. However, you get a sense of what goes wrong & his style is more critical when things do go wrong.

    Cheers,
