Cannot sort a table containing merged cells (Word97/SR2 et, probably, al.

I have built a table by merging cells.

On the surface (and with reveal-all set) everything looks fine. It's true that there are paragraph marks within the cells, but I don't believe that has anything to do with the merging.

The cell merging was performed occasionaly on pairs of cells in column2. Nothing exciting like building rows with different numbers of cells.

I choose Tables, Sort and receive the pop-up message "Cannot sort a table containing merged cells", and for the life of me I can't imagine why Word ought to barf at all. It's a bug, as the several knowledge base articles hint.

    That's not a "bug".
It's just an artifact of how MSFT implemented Tables.

KB articles such as the ones you indicate are common. When you see such articles applying to more than one version of Word, it is MSFT's mealy-mouthed way of saying, "Yes, we know it's a problem, but that's just the way it is ,and it may, if at all practical/possible, be too hard to fix/change:.
