Yes. Although I am decidedly not a Windows ME fan (and you'll find that many people feel the same way), you can run setup, then boot with your XP CD-ROM and repair the boot sector.

There is a lot of information out there on this topic. The standard, preferred way of doing this is to install ME/9x first and NT/2K/XP after, but it can still be done. Try looking at this thread for a recent, similar discussion. There is also a good article straight from Microsoft: How to Multiple Boot Windows XP, Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows 95, Windows 98, and MS-DOS (Q217210).

Thanks for the quick response. I also have Win98 and you are right, if I install another operating system I think I will go with 98 as ME is to unstable.

You said: "you can run setup, then boot with your XP CD-Rom and repair the boot sector."

Do you mean I should run the Win98 setup and install on a second partition (D Drive)(WinXP is on C Drive), then run Win XP from the CD to repair the boot sector?

That is exactly correct. I should have added though, that you will probably need to modify the BOOT.INI file after installing 9x and repairing XP, so that it will recognize that a 9x operating system is there.

This Microsoft article may be more relevant to your situation: How to Set Up Dual Boot After You Install Windows (Q153762).

Do you know what I need to change in the BOOT.INI file? The article from Microsoft that you referenced is for setting up dual boot with MS-DOS and Win 95. The article also stated that I could use the same procedures for dual booting Win95 and NT, but I don't know if the exact same changes are required to the BOOT.INI file as the article suggests. Any ideas?

I not sure that you would have to modify the boot.ini file - unless it failed to show all the OSs you have. You can do this from within XP : Control Panel/System/Advanced/Start Up and Recovery/Settings/Edit the Start Up Option file. You might have to add a last entry on the lines of 'C:= Microsoft Windows SE' The NT based OS should show up automatically.

Merc, glad to see you around these parts again. I'm pretty sure that you do need to modify BOOT.INI if you install 9x after XP, but since I don't do it in that order I can't say for certain. And since I don't have a BOOT.INI handy I can't check either. Wasn't there also an additional line that you need to add to it?

Further to all of that, XP comes with a new MSCONFIG utility that allows you to edit the BOOT.INI file. About time!

Just as an update. I have not done the install of Win98 as a dual boot yet. Thanks again for all the input.
