    Delete message from inbox without opening Outlook? (2000 SR-1)

    Hi all,

    I have a prob with Outlook 2000 where a nasty message has arrived in my inbox and as soon as I open Outlook it crashes fatally. The problem is that I have the auto-preview and preview panes enabled (lesson learned...)

    So is there any way I can delete this message without opening Outlook?

    Incidentally I have Trend Scan for Outlook and it reports that there is no virus, and I run Outlook in the "restricted" zone os it cannot be a script running either....

    Edited to add:
    Sorry - just noticed you can't open Outlook in the first place.
    Try:
    OL2000: (IMO) How to Use the Inbox Repair Tool to Recover Messages (Q197315)

    ***

    Make sure the errant message has another OK message either side.
    Select the one above, then holding shift, select the one below. (This will select all three.)
    Click delete.
    Go to deleted items and drag or move the two good messages back to your inbox.

    Crude, but it works.

    This is a tricky one. If the folder in issue were not the first thing Outlook opened, you could use this VBA code to change the view before accessing the folder:

    <pre>Sub ChangeFolderView()
    Dim ns As NameSpace, fldr As MAPIFolder, expl As Explorer
    Set ns = Application.GetNamespace("MAPI")
    Set fldr = ns.Folders("My Personal Folders").Folders("Inbox")
    Set expl = fldr.GetExplorer
    With expl
    .CurrentView = "Messages"
    .ShowPane olPreview, False
    .Display
    End With
    Set expl = Nothing
    Set fldr = Nothing
    Set ns = Nothing
    End Sub</pre>

    You can do something similar at the command line or a desktop icon with the following VBScript (paste into Notepad and save with a .vbs extension):
    <pre>Dim olApp, ns, fldr, expl
    Set olApp = CreateObject("Outlook.Application")
    Set ns = olApp.GetNamespace("MAPI")
    Set fldr = ns.Folders("My Personal Folders").Folders("Inbox")
    Set expl = fldr.GetExplorer
    expl.CurrentView = "Messages"
    expl.ShowPane 3, False
    Set expl = Nothing
    Set fldr = Nothing
    Set ns = Nothing
    olApp.Quit
    Set olApp = Nothing</pre>

    The stuff in italics will have to be changed to fit your set-up; you can get the friendly names of your PSTs using the Mail control panel.

    have you tried the /safe command line switch?

    in start menu, run type:
    outlook.exe /safe
    you may need to use the full path to outlook.

    alternately, you can start outlook with the nopreview switch, but you'll either loose custom toolbars when you restore preview or need to edit the registry to get the preview pane back.

    A bit laborious, but this may achieve what you're looking for:<UL><LI>Move your *.pst file from its current location. The default is ...Local SettingsApplication DataMicrosoftOutlook.<LI>When Outlook opens, it will ask for the file. Hopefully, you'll have a backup *.pst file that you can point it to. If not, Outlook will create a new *.pst file for you.<LI>Move the problem *.pst file back to its default location and load it (using File|Open|Personal Folders)<LI>Change the default view for the problem Inbox using the code Jefferson posted above.<LI>Delete the problem item.<LI>Close Outlook and either relocate the archive *.pst used in Step 2 or delete the new *.pst file created for this exercise. <LI>Reopen Outlook and things "should" be back to normal[/list]HTH

    Re: Delete message from inbox without opening Outl

    Thanks to all for the suggestions <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

    I have managed to get it working and delete the problem item by following most of the steps in the previous post, but I to used the option to have outlook open in a different folder rather than the inbox, then when another message came into the inbox I was able to open the folder and turn off the preview pane/auto-preview, so then I could delete thekiller mail without having to use the VBA code to change the views.

    Once again thanks to everyone for their help, and the moral of the story is to turn off the auto-preview and preview panes in the inbox!

    Cheers, Mark
