    File, Open Dialog box shortcuts

Hi, In Word 2000 when you click File, Open and the dialog box appears, how do you get a shortcut in the left side where the icons labeled History, My Docs, Desktop, etc. are? Those that are there by default are useless to me. I want to place shortcuts to network drives there.

Thanks! You can email any suggestions to me also at bwass42@mindspring.com

That is not what I am looking for. Does that mean that there is no way to change the default 5 icons? I find that hard to believe....

Thanks for the info. It is a regedit thing. See link on my other post to MS support page for it. Didn't realize it would be so complicated to change such a simple thing....

That's is what so neat about Placebar - it is simplicity itself.
In fact, it is so good, MS themselves promote it.

    Hi Brian,

    Although this is Woody's Lounge...<grin>

Here is another Places Bar customizer by Romke Soldaat that allows a few more modifications. It might be what you are looking for:

On a totally separate issue, but one that relates to your post, I discovered that you can cut everything after the "ASP" from the URL and it will still work.

You're right- it says it's free, but doesn't provide a download link.

Why not put a post in the WOPR peer-ro-peer forum?

The download link is there now.

It does say "Click herer to download", but let's not get picky.

Re: File, Open Dialog box shortcuts

    Hi BAM,

I gave this a run-through without any registry backup- and now I'm in trouble.

Many of the documents I open through the File, Open dialog (More in Excel than in Word) are causing Dr Watson errors. Opening the same documents through Windows Explorer works fine.

Perhaps I should have been alerted by the "a few interesting customization options that I found by hacking around" in the accompanying article.

I've tried installing My Office 2000 (Developers & SR1), and also doing a "repair" install; but the problem continues.

Presumably one of the Registry settings is incorrect- but I don't know how to get rid of what was done (I have very little familiarity with the registry)

Re: File, Open Dialog box shortcuts

    Hi Geoff:

Are you saying that you installed Soldat's customizations & now you're having problems. Do you have Win 98? If so, you do have a registry backup. You can boot to a DOS prompt & type scanreg/restore. This will allow you to restore your registry to a time before you changed it. Do it soon. Every day, Window's replaces an older version with today's version.

    Hope this helps.
