Cannot open Excel (2000 with Win98)

The splash screen comes up and immediately thereafter a message about user.exe. I have uninstalled both disks and reinstalled them to no avail. System file checker reported two corrupted system files, one RAGENT.dll and I do not remember the other. Both were restored and now I get the message "invalid page fault in module [unknown]".

Any ideas on what I should do...the other Office apps work fine.

Been there, done that. Check out this post. It helped me and perhaps it will get you up and running as well.

Thanks Ricky, tried every switch that I could find a reference to, even the one that bypassed XLStart, none of them worked.

Will try the eraser tool and see if that works.

Thanks for the help!

Re: Cannot open Excel (2000 with Win98)

Well, that almost worked...now I get the splash screen and a nice, shapely hourglass after which I must reboot...at least no error messages! I am thinking it might just be about time to reformat the disk and partition it (never has been done in 2 years or so).

I did find two erasers, one for disk one and another for disk two. Unistalled all of Office and ran both erasers, then reinstalled Office. Funny thing is, it is only Excel.

Another funny thing is the graphic below. I am thinking this is way uncool to uninstall an app and have this much garbage left behind! Thanks for your help!

Re: Cannot open Excel (2000 with Win98)

Hi Michael,

When I see errors like that my advice is:

Try opening Excel without any addins or hidden workbooks:

Start, Run,
"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Automation

Note you may have to change the path.

If your error disappears, there is either an add-in or a (hidden) workbook that is loaded upon XL's start, which bothers you.

- Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from there.
- In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck them one at the time, each time restarting XL
- In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is entered after "Alternate startup file location". Clear it.

Another option is to open XL in Safe mode:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Safe

Also, you might try:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOfficeExcel.exe" /Regserver

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your toolbar customisation file. Locate all files with extension .xlb and rename the extension(s) to something like .old
Now try and start XL again.

Finally, this is what MS has to say:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...b;en-us;Q280504

Maybe one fits your problem?

Mike -
Sorry nothings worked so far, but don't format the hd just yet! Try starting excel in safe mode, try starting windows in safe mode, then excel. Remember to reboot (refresh the registry) after each fix you try, so you'll know what worked.

Very uncool the way Office install deposits files EVERWHERE, the way a wolf would mark his territory. There's always Quattro....Not!

Re: Cannot open Excel (2000 with Win98)

Hi Jan,

Tried every available switch with no results, and there is nothing in the XLStart directory.

However, there were three files with .xlb extensions. I deleted them, thinking that hey, it can't get any worse than this, and now Excel opens and works just fine.

Thanks for your help, and you too Ricky!

You know, as an afterthought, you would think that the .xlb files would have been removed during uninstall or at least during the "eraser" cleanup. Wonder why they do not get removed?

Ah, uninstallers. Terrific past-times, they are....

To sooth you, read this excellent (IMO) comments on installing applications. I agree to the text wholeheartedly!

Maybe it's a sign of admission by MS that the software is buggy & requires re-installation, but, hey, why make the user have to go to all the trouble of re-setting up their customisations as well?

My favorite excerpt, this:

"While all setups include a progress bar, some latest generation setups (Microsoft Office 2000, again, and others), include a new concept of progress bar: when it reaches 100%, it starts again at 0%"

Have often wondered about that as well...

Love the add-in, thanks for the link.

Re: Cannot open Excel (2000 with Win98)

Well, could understand the fact that the toolbar files are still there after the uninstall, but after the specially constructed "cleaner", I cannot understand (although I do remember reading somewhere in the "Readme" file that the cleaner was intended for cleanup prior to reinstalling Office.)

In light of the fact that the whole app was toast due to the corrupted toolbar file, would gladly have customized my toolbars vs going 3 days and nearly bonkers trying to figure out what was wrong with the app.

Imagine the average user...no amount of fix and repair works, uninstalling and reinstalling does not work, they have run up $$$ calling home, probably been told to download the special cleaner and gosh darn it, it doesn't work either!

And when you think about it, what average user would gain confidence that such a "reinstall" had actually been a reinstall? It's like getting your car back after some insurance work: "Sure we fixed your front suspension after that nasty sideswipe - and while we were at it, we made sure we put an extra value dent back into your new fender."
