Win XP install on Laptop (XP Pro)

I have a Compaq Presario laptop 1700 series which had Windows ME installed originally. I did a clean install to Windows XP Pro and kicked up the RAM to 256. Here are the problems: I lost the swappable bay icon; I can

These items are harware related and is why one should get the new OS for a laptop from the OEM. That said, I upgraded my Sony laptop using a retail copy of XP pro. But the likes of what you have listed, I was able to get updates from Sony at their Support web page. They have updates based on the different models that were produced in the past and still support. They started with the newer ones and then went back from there.

But knowing Compaq anthing is possible.

i know compaq - and they for supporting OS that don't ship with the hardware. They also won't provide new OS for old hardware. My laptop shipped with Win98SE but put Win2k on it. They don't support business class OSs on consumer machines and i was stuck for drivers. Fortunately, everything worked by the DVD video player and i only used the DVD for data CDs.

I had no problems with the touch pad working under either win2k or winxp - but i didn't use their drivers. I stuck with the ones winxp choose for me. I'd look for winnt/2k/xp drivers for the pad from among the other laptop models. Or just stick with the ones winxp installs.

also - if you are using officexp, it might be speech, not the touch pad that is causing the problems. Disable the microphone (sounds applet).

The USB/Palm issues are problably unrelated to the xp problems, but the bay problem will likely need an updated program - look for one that works under win2k for a different model.

Thanks for the tips, Dave. I knew I was probably going to have problems installing XP on a laptop, but even with the problems, I prefer XP to ME, of which I can't say enough bad things. ME is a miserable excuse for an operating system. Thanks again.

Re: Win XP install on Laptop (XP Pro)

The main reason we (the wife and I) have purchased Sony laptops, was that they supply new OS's of the some what older machines.
For a exsample see http://www.ita.sel.sony.com/support/...120fx140fx150/

As you can see that they have Software and drivers, and then the OS upgrades. If one is to go to the different links, one will find links to buying the OS or just the new software and drivers that are to be used with the different models.

Exactly which Compaq Presario 1700 series laptop do you have, there are XP Pro drivers for some models but not for others on the Compaq website. For example if you have a 1700T then you will find downloads at http://web14.compaq.com/falco/sp_result.as...del=3742&Os=118.

Have you searched for your particular model on the driver download page at http://www.compaq.com/support/files/index.html
