French accents in title problems (Word 97)

I'll go right to the point
I work for a teleivsion station.
The reporters use a home made program called conductor wich is linked to ODBC database and word to type their texts.
This conductor program is then linked somehow to another computer who displays the news-readers text on a teleprompter machine.
The problem I get is when the title of the texts that a reporter typed contains a french accent, the teleprompter computer is not able to even open the text.
I would like to be able to change the titles texts written by our reporters which might contain french accents to a non accented title. Is that possible with one of the options in word or should I make a VBA routine that will do that for me <img src=/S/question.gif border=0 alt=question width=15 height=15>

Not sure whether by "title" you mean part of the text inside the file, or another field in the database, or the name of a file. This might make a difference in how you approach it.

Having never used a French version of Word, I don't know whether you can simply change a setting have and it revert to an English keyboard, or whether you need to do something more complicated...

By "title" I meant the name you give the document when you do a "SAVE AS".

Sorry about that, I should have been clearer

I know, I know that it might not seem like french but it's used only internally at the TV station on the teleprompter.

The problem is with the second computer, it just can't open the files that have a name wich contains an accented characters though we can actually see the accented character on screen.

It's not just third party programs.

I discovered recently that Microsoft Briefcase on Windows 2000 can't deal with filenames containing accents either!

    Cultural imperialism strikes again!

Being a TV station, I'm not sure whether all your teleprompter scripts get generated on a LAN or whether you occasionally get file scripts sent in "from the field". If it is ONLY the former, then you need a template macro that is automatically loaded on each machine that will intercept File Save names and convert the ANSI/ASCII accented characters into their non-accented equivalents. This is a preferred solution as you should be able to capture all your problems at source.

If there is a risk that this may not capture all your scripts - for whatever reason - then you may need to consider renaming the contents of your teleprompter source folder(s) with some form of batch program. A good, simple piece of freeware called THE Rename written by your compatriot Herv

The texts that need to be displayed on the teleprompter come from different sources (from the field would be a nice way of putting it) so yes I will have to check for accented characters on every reporters computer so that we eleminate those "unwanted characters" and replace them with unnaccented letters.

Is there not some form of folder - or series of folders - from which the teleprompter draws its scripts, and to which the reporters upload their reports? If that is the case, then it would simply be a matter of using a renaming program on the folder(s) local to the teleprompter shortly before you went into rehearsal - and then again (for late breaking stories) just before you went on air. (The program I mentioned simply needs Windows to work. It operates independently of Word.) It seems too much of a risk to re-check a whole series of laptops again and again. HTH
