Does it make any difference who logs in? Administrator or ordinary user?

    Woody's Office Watch v.5 no.15

PREMATURE CLOSING OF OFFICE 2000 SR-1a
We've had many reports from people who have installed SR-1
then found that whenever they start an Office 2000 program
it appears on the screen for a few moments then disappears.

There's two possible explanations for this behavior, and
while one is uncommon, the other is much more common.

First the unlikely possibility. There's a Window NT/2000
permissions problem when SR-1 tries to write to the
registry. This can cause an Office program to close
immediately or you'll one of several error messages. The
fix is a complicated registry hack. All the details are
    at
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q236/5/92.ASP

The other possibility is much more common ...

    ILLEGAL VERSION OF OFFICE 2000
If you have installed Office 2000 with an illegal or
pirated product key then SR-1 will shut itself down. Some
product keys were stolen after Office 2000 was released and
those keys were used on pirated versions. SR-1 programs
check for these stolen keys and refuse to operate with
    them.

The great pity is that Microsoft chose not to put some sort
of warning notice up when this occurs. The result has been
a lot of angry and frustrated Office users calling
technical support, who could have been told via a message
box on the screen what has happened. Presumably there's no
notice because Microsoft decided that courtesy wasn't
deserved for users of illegal software.

The problem with that arrogance is that it assumes the user
knows he or she is using an illegal copy of Office 2000.
While some pirated copies of software are obviously illegal
(because they come in a plastic bag or CD case with no
proper labeling) there are much more sophisticated pirates
out there who reproduce everything including the retail
box. Unless you're an expert you can't tell these phonies
from the real boxes. It's only now you find out - the hard
    way.

Even more people are caught in this trap if they originally
had an illegal copy then installed a proper legal version
over the top of it. Microsoft, in setting this trap in
SR-1, didn't account for the fact that Office 2000 doesn't
prompt you for a new Product Key when installing over an
existing version - it just uses the existing key it finds
in the registry. We've had many people email us and they
have been certain that they have a legal version of Office
2000 - we suspect many of these cases are explained by the
installation of the legal copy over illegal Office 2000.

If you know you have an illegal version of Office 2000 then
you should uninstall it and then reinstall from a legal CD
and use the Product Key that came with that legitimate CD.
Microsoft also has a registry workaround for those of you
confident enough to tinker with the registry see
    http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q255/5/03.asp

    Thanks for that.

I'm using a product key supplied by the customer, so it looks as if this might possibly be the cause.

    Many thanks.
    Gary.
