    TOC Page Numbers (Word XP)

I have a document that has a table of contents which starts on page 2. When we open the document all the page numbers in the TOC read the same page (in some cases they're all 1 and in other cases they're all 2). You can Ctrl+Click over any of the page numbers in the TOC and they hyperlink you to the correct page for that text. The only way to have the electronic version of the TOC reflect the correct page numbers is to select the TOC and Update Fields. This has to be done each time the document is opened.

People receiving an electronic copy of the document are dubious as to the accuracy of the TOC since these jyrations are required in order to have the correct page numbers reflect.

Has anyone else seen this? Is this normal behaviour?? Thanks for any feedback anyone has on this.

I use Word 2000. Whatever page numbers are in there when I save are the ones I get when I open the document again. Not sure why yours reset to 1 or 2.

Does the problem recur if you delete the TOC and create a new one?

Re: TOC Page Numbers (Word XP)

I have opened the same "problem" document in a version of Word XP that is a straight install; no custom templates (no custom normal.dot) or fancy add-ins. The problem disappears in "native" Word.

This leaves me to think our problem lies in the customization of our default template (unless it could be tied to something in the DMS but I'm not sure how that would affect things). I've tested the styles and It isn't there. At least it this narrows the scope down and rules out it being an XP issue.

Thanks for you any other thoughts you may have.

I don't have XP, but check Tools/Templates & Add-ins & see if "Automatically update document styles" (that's the wording in 2000) is ticked. If so untick it.
