Short doc with Appendix (word 97)

I know this must be simple but I can't figure it out...

I frequently work on short documents (fewer than 100 pages) where I have included the section number in the page numbers (e.g., 1-10), but when i want to include, in the same document, an appendix with its own page numbering (e.g., A-1, etc), the front matter resets to that A- format). I've inserted a section between front matter and appendix but that doesn't solve the problem. Oh and another issue--I'd like the table of contents to pick up the appendices (with the A- formatting) I've inserted.

My workaround up to this point has been to insert a character with a dash (e.g., A-) in front of the new page number (you can reset the page numbers in a new section), but this hard coding won't appear in the TOC. Of course I can hard code the TOC also by putting A-, B- in front of the page numbers, but then i have to remember to do this every time I recompile table of contents.

I've looked into field codes, but it seems to me there must be a simple way around this.

In longer documents I just create a new document for my appendices and use RD fields to pick up the TOC. In these short docs I can't do that..

    Any suggestions are appreciated

    Thanks KTYorke

I think my problem might be simpler than what you encountered, because I am trying to insert an Appendix in the same document (I think you had appendices in separate docs). I tried the codes you referenced and they don't seem to be working...

How can I insert a page number (A-1) in the header in this new section (Appendix A) so that it is picked up in the TOC?

Another tricky problem is page 2 in my Appendix should be A-2 but appears as either 2 or B-2.

I know this is something obvious...

    thanks

    Charles,

Thanks for the info. MVPS looks like a great site.

But the link wasn't exactly on point. I already have my document set up with chapter-page number in the header, using styles. And that works great.

My issue is that I want to insert a section break and start an Appendix with A-1 page numbers in the header (instead of 1-1). And i've disengaged "Same as previous" in the header. And still the front section, before the section break, resets to A-1 format.

I've tried modifying heading 9 and making that my Appendix style (based on Normal and not Heading 1) and still it doesn't work. It seems that I can have chapter-page numbers based on a numeric (1-1) or an alpha (A-1) but i can't have both in the same doc.

I just can't think of any other workaround trying to get an appendix (with A-1 page numbering) in the same doc with 1-1 front matter. Inserting a field code would only solve half the problem, because I also need to have the appendices appear in TOC...

    Does this make any sense?...

You might also want to refer to Article ID# Q196962 from the Microsoft website.
I've been successful following the advice, posted on this list, to define ALL levels of heading numbering through the numbering definition you establish for Heading 1. Define them all at one time (Heading 1 through Heading 7-Appendix), without closing the numbering definitions, and you'll be OK.

Thanks for your help, Larry. I quit going out to KnowledgeBase because it often seemed irrelevant, but I guess I'll have to start perusing it occasionally.

    Thanks again.
