    Tab Causes Exit

I have run on to a problem on occasion where the Tab key quits functioning as tab and instead causes an immediate exit (the equivalent of a Close Form command). I have to reboot to get rid of this problem. Does anyone know what causes this and what the cure (short of rebooting) is?

Chuck, does this happen in all programs when it occurs? Any patterns you have noticed (say, opening a certain program and all of a sudden WHAMMO)?

It sounds like something is corrupt - if there were any recent software updates/installs/patches it would be useful information.

What happens if you boot into Safe Mode?

    Re: Tab Causes Exit

    Hi Mark,

As best as I remember this happens in all programs -- it's like the Tab key suddenly changes its function to a close window function. I have had this happen at least once or twice before. This last time I was in an Access2000 data entry form and when I hit tab to go to the next field, it bounced me out of that form just as if I had clicked on Close Form. But it did the same when I was in any other application - hitting tab caused the form to close or exit.

As I said before, the only cure I have come up with is to reboot, and the problem goes away. But I remain curious as to why this happens, what causes it and how would I fix it beyond having to reboot every time. The problem occurs rarely. I haven't done any updates or patches recently, so that couldn't be the source. The only new activity has been some work with VB 6.0 which I haven't worked with until the last few days.

I dunno if it would fix that problem, but you might try doing a Repair of Internet Explorer. This has fixed some strange, unexplained problems I have had in the past.. (Wait a minute, I was using Windows)...

Go to: Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Information then click the Tools Drop Down box and you will see Internet Explorer Repair Tool. It won't hurt it and may fix something ...

    Tex,
Thanks for the memory jog. I had forgotten about this little gem until I read your post. Ran the utility and "Voila", multiple minor annoyances that had been building up in my system just vanished. Web pages are loading about 30- 50% faster too.
Sure wish MS wouldn't put all the good stuff in such obscure places. <img src=/w3timages/censored.gif alt=censored border=0>

Glad to be able to remind you of one of those little things that mean so much to us all.
Now, if someone could just offer an answer to my question... <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21>

In Windows 98, under "Other" "Finds and Wants" the post is "Point to Point Text Calls". This is where someone else said for me to post this question. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

Aye, but if no one knows the answer, how can they post a reply? <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Yes, this is something a Telecommunications Specialist would have to answer, and I am not such a person myself. I have gotten a lot of great tips from this site, and thought someone out there might have gone through this before. I know this machine will do the thing I want to do, because I have accidentally done it twice. Just not able to reproduce the result when I want to. Can't figure out what it was that I did to make it connect and work. I will probably end up buying yet another program that is supposed to do that job. If you want to see more info about Telecommunications (and other) products for People with various Disabilities, you could check out a site by UltraTec. They make the TDD that I use now. They also sell a modem/software package, but it slows down the transmission speed to 45.5 baud, and this will not work with computers using ASCII code, but will only work with other TDD devices that are the same baud rate. They have some things anyone might find useful, like a box that puts the Caller I.D. Name/Number on a TV screen, if you have the service in your area. The technology available today just amazes me.

My quest is to be able to use this computer to call other computers in a text mode. <img src=/S/bow.gif border=0 alt=bow width=15 height=15>
