Saving Files from Old 486 to Win 95 Format Prob.

Need to take 20 -30 files off an old 486 running Windows For Workgroups 3.1 and transfer them into slightly newer Windows 95 Machine (( cyrix chip 150MHz.) You'll first ask why but that's what we've got to work with right now. Will upgrade to somewhat newer Win 98 Pentium soon. The problem is, the 486 still runs fine and they can call up the documents and use, print them as needed. The machine appears to copy the files to floppy disk but when trying to load on the Win 95 machine it says disk not formatted. When I format it it still says not formatted starting with either machine. Tried switching out the floppy drive but no luck. My Win 98 Pentium 300 MHz also wouldn't open the floppy and said not formatted. Anybody have any idea what's happening. We have several other same 486's that I have no problems like this and was able to transfer files to the different machines. The 486 is running Win 3.1 as standalone now and not in a network.

Actually, if someone is asking why, it's because they aren't in the same situation. If the 486 does what you need it to, then why run out and buy a 1GHz screamin' demon to do the same thing?

    OK, soapbox off.

You've tried formatting the disk in the target machine (the Win95 system)? When you put the disk into the 486, it copies, and then you go back to the Win95 system and still no dice. Have I got that right?

Which machine got the replacement floppy drive? The Win95 system or the 486?

Sure sounds like a bad case of misaligned drive heads to me. Outside of that, you could be facing something wrong with the DOS implementation on the 486 with WFW. Is it possible to connect the PCs to a network and shovel those files off onto a share?

Could that 486 have a single density 3 1/2 floppy drive? That might account for the formatting problems. But I'm just guessin' here.

Sorry, my reply got deleted when the board went down; perhaps it was sent to you as an e-mail?

The idea was to use a ZIP (100) drive to ferry the data between the machines. The old one I have came with drivers for Windows 3.1.

Re: Saving Files from Old 486 to Win 95 Format Pro

I solved this and posted my solution in General Windows Solutions "Case Solved" I did it by switching the hard drive of the 486 into another similar machine we had that was still up and running. The last before I decommision them all! Worked like a charm and I was able to save and load the floppies on the Win95 machine no problem. Thanks for your suggestions and it's still a mystery what the original problem was. I put a new floppy drive in and I still got nowhere. Thanks again.
