    Applets Not Working (IE 6)

I've just formatted my hard drive and did a clean install of Windows 98 SE. I've also upgraded to IE/OE6 and I can no longer view any applets on websites. I have java enabled, can anyone advise what I need to do please.

    Cheers, Di

When you've had the advice you seek, and have spent hours trying to get IE6 to work under Win 98, and failed, then my suggestion would be to roll back to the version of iE that's meant to be used with DOS based code : anything before 6.

You may well get further reply on the lines of 'I've used IE6 with Win 98 for n months and had no problem' I can tell you that for every one of these there are 10 who have failed. If you want to use IE6, upgrade to XP.

Thank you and yes I was one of those that had IE6 working well under Win 98 before I formatted last week. I have forgotten what I had to upgrade before to get the applets working. May have to try the Anfy board. As for XP <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> it would be a bit like over kill on this old dinosaur.

Did you down load the Virtal Machine from MS or the Java code from SUN?
IE 6 does not contain the Java code, do to the law suit from Sun.

It must be down loaded, this way you can down load the Sun version or the MS version, your choice NOT MS's <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Applets Not Working (IE 6)

Microsoft has stopped distributing the mostly-Java-compatible Microsoft Virtual Machine as part of IE or Windows XP (see Q299672). You can download it here:

Updated Microsoft Virtual Machine for Windows Operating Systems (Build 3805, released 3/4/02)

If you prefer, you also can install another Java Virtual Machine, but finding them is not for the faint of heart. Sun's Java 2 Platform Standard Edition version 1.4 software contains what is reputed to be a faster VM than Microsoft's, but it's a big download. I didn't see any way to just grab the Java plug-in that links APPLET and OBJECT tags in the browser with the Java Runtime Engine, although possibly during the install you could trim back the disk usage.

There are some differences between the two products, as you would expect. Sun's compatibility page describes some of them. Hope this helps.

I downloaded msjavx86.exe on 04/26/02 and this didn't make any difference. However the SUN one has just done the trick. <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>

    Many thanks,
