Another Task Scheduler problem (XP HOME)

For some reason, there are a couple of tasks which I have added to my Task Scheduler in XP that won't run. I get the same error message:

<font color=red>The scheduled task did not run because an incorrect password or user name was entered.</font color=red>

I don't use a password to login, so when I first created these tasks I didn't enter a password when prompted. And yes, I am logged in as an Administrator (Boss/Jeff). After I saw that these failed, I then opened the "Set Password" and entered one arbitrarily in both fields. But I got the same error message. The tasks that do work, and there are 2 or 3, are for Norton utilities, LiveUpdate, etc., which were created within Norton itself and no password was asked for nor entered for these. But the scheduled task to do a full antivirus system scan does not work. And.... I can manually run this program from inside the Scheduler. However, I cannot run the other two manually. One is a .bat file (Fred Langa's "CleanXP" utility).

    So, what's the trick to get these tasks to run? <img src=/S/hairout.gif border=0 alt=hairout width=31 height=23>

    Leif,

    <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15> It was the clue I needed. <img src=/S/rofl.gif border=0 alt=rofl width=15 height=15> All the scheduled tasks work as they should now.

    THANKS as always,

Re: Another Task Scheduler problem (XP HOME)

Actually, I have the same question Jeff does, and perhaps being a little denser than he, the referenced KB article didn't enlighten me. I don't want to put a password on my local user account because then I'd have to type it each time I turn my machine on. Similarly, I don't want to create a second account for the same reason.

I'd happily think that it was impossible to run a scheduled task if Norton AntiVirus hadn't set up two of them that work fine. They claim to have been created by my account with no password and run under my account with no password, and they run without error. What magic do they do?

I went so far as to try and copy the .job file associated with one of them, but it wouldn't run, displaying the status message "Could not start". So there's some magic somewhere.

Anybody with their wizard hat on able to penetrate the magic? Your thoughts much appreciated.

    Jordan,

You can enter a password that you don't need to type in every time. You do this by enabling auto-logon. Auto-logon stores the user information in the Windows registry, which I do at home because I have no need for fast user switching and the welcome screen bothers me. Thus, I disabled the welcome and fast user options, and used TweakUI to take care of the auto-logon.

I can't verify this at the moment but I believe Norton runs as a privileged administrator or system account. You can check and see how it is logging in by viewing the scheduled tasks - perhaps changing the other items to match will be your solution.

    That did it. Thanks.

BTW Norton says that it runs as me (no password), but it doesn't say who created the job. So they're still doing magic, but the TweakUI workaround is sufficient.

are you sure the norton ones really are running? my experience is that they are not - and we usually discover that when AV reports the definations are out of date.
