    Database won't open (2000)

I tried to open a database earlier, only to be greeted with the following message:

The Microsoft Jet database engine could not find the object 'databases.' Make sure the object exists and that you spelt its name and the path name correctly.

I have tried open the database by double-clicking the file icon in explorer, choosing open file from inside access and have attempted to import it into a new database - still the same message. I've looked on technet but can't find anything helpful.

Any suggestions or is this a case of terminal corruption?

ps. the file hasn't been modified in 5 months

    Re: Database won't open (2000)

I recently went through the same thing working with Access97 on Win95 with Novell network. Turned out to be the Novell client that was the culprit. You could try repairing/compacting the database. If this doesn't work you could try importing all objects into a new db but if you can't open it, it's not likely this will work. Is the file on a network file server? Could you restore from tape?

    Re: Database won't open (2000)

Tried compact and repair but I just get the same message. There seems to be no way to get at the file.
The file is on a server, trouble is I don't think our backups go far enough back to include a different version of the database.
I'm guessing the last time it was modified it got corrupted but its unlikely I'll be able to get a backup of the database before this time.

Any opinion on whether it might be worth buying some recovery software?

So sorry to hear that, Darsha. I've had no experience with recovery software but here's a site in UK that does repair work I got from a search on google:

Maybe someone else here has had some experience with this sort of thing. Good luck to you!

OfficeRecovery has a demo on his site. Maybe you can try it before buying.

I have been able to open up databases by using the /decompile option and holding down the shift key at the same time. Search the forum for the posts on decompile .

    Re: Database won't open (2000)

Just tried the Access recovery tool demo from OfficeRecovery, works like a charm. <img src=/S/groovin.gif border=0 alt=groovin width=21 height=21> Now I need to persuade someone to buy the full version. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

    Thanks everyone
